This will be the Basketball team's first year at St Mary's
and with the right numbers we may make a Varsities team
.It’s a great way to meet new people, and if you’re
a PE student a great way to get to know the lecturers a
bit better. Basketball is a great way to keep fit especially
during the off season or just for something different than
going to the gym. The sessions are open to everyone, male
and female and usually during lunch time for an hour or
so. It is never taken too seriously so don't worry if you
don't know your bank shot from your bank balance, unless
you’re in Elaine’s team, then its win at all
costs. Its always good craic so come along and give it a
go. |

As GAA development officer my job is to get as many of you
as possible involved in Gaelic Games. This year I will be
running a series of recreational tournaments aimed at students
who have never played Gaelic Games before or who don’t
play regularly. The CAU tournaments will take place as usual
including the men’s and ladies Gaelic Football fresher
7s plus the Hurling and Camogie 7s. Finally, I am available
to assist the GAA clubs in St Mary’s with set up and
preparations for the incoming season. |

St Mary's University College Netball Club competes in the
Northern Ireland Universities league and the Callaghan Cup
with a first and second team competing in both competitions.
St Mary's has had players represent the college on the N.
Ireland Universities team in the past. The club also encourages
students to engage in their recreational netball club which
runs weekly. |

Founded in 1947, the Men’s Gaelic club is a college
institution. Firsts and seconds teams are catered for as
well as freshers’ football. Last year the senior team
competed in the Mc Kenna Cup, Ryan cup picking up on impressive
victories over Armagh and UUJ. Unfortunately the team was
defeated by DCU last year in the Sigerson cup but hope to
regroup with fresh talent and get further than ever in 2011/2012.
The formation of the reserve team means that the Men’s
Gaelic have a policy of ensuring that everyone who wants
a game, plays a game, and indeed the team played in the
reserves this year. Training is likely to be held on Monday
and Wednesday evenings but to be on the safe side keep an
eye out for dates and times on the sports notice boards,
located in the Students’ Union area. |

St Mary's is ranked among the finest in Ulster Higher
Education. The girls hope to build upon previous successes
and make an impression on the All-Ireland O'Connor Cup competition.
The LGFC pride themselves in being a club where strong,
lasting friendships are made. It is great fun and even if
you have never touched a Gaelic ball in your life, you are
more than welcome to join. Training is likely to be held
on Monday and Wednesday evening. Keep an eye on the notice
boards or contact Helen for training times. |

Since its re-formation in 2003 the Hurling club has been
going from strength to strength. In 2008/2009 the Club reached
a historic success completing an all-Ireland double.
We had some great improvements last year. For the first
time in the clubs history we were victorious against UUJ.
We have also become more competitive in the Ryan Cup narrowly
being beaten in our three games. Our hopes for this year
are to qualify for the Fitzgibbon weekend and would welcome
all new players to help us achieve this. There will of course
be a few quality nights out thrown in as well! |

The Camogie club in St Mary's is one of the longest running
and best in the college. We train a few times a week, usually
Monday and Wednesday and have matches every few weeks. After
a successful run in the league last year we are hoping to
build on that this year with the ultimate goal being to
reach the Purcell competition which is held in February
of every year. We hold a few fundraising nights each year
which not only helps us throughout the year but are also
always great craic. The girls that play are dedicated to
the club... both on and off the pitch!! Joining the camogie
club is a great way to settle in and meet other students.
New players are always welcome so feel free to join up as
membership will guarantee some of the best experiences of
your St Mary's career. |

G'day guys and girls, my name is Phil and I was looking
to start a St Mary's mixed water-polo society. The society
would initially be simply to introduce the sport to St Mary's,
and we will run introductory sessions, training, and matches.
Water-polo is a great way to keep fit, but we won’t
be too intense so it will also be a great way to meet new
people, and learn a really fun new sport. |

The Martial Arts club has grown in popularity over the
years especially among the female population of St Mary's
who are interested in learning self defence. With no previous
experience required and minimal level of fitness this is
an enjoyable way to build core strength. Gaelic teams throughout
the country incorporate these techniques in training as
it provides an excellent cardio vascular work out.
It is great fun and everyone is welcome to join |

The Liturgy Group takes on the responsibility of organizing
the weekly College Liturgy. This includes preparing the
service, reading reflections and decorating the Chapel in
relation to a particular theme. The group is active and
consistent throughout the College and is supported by both
staff and students. |

The Folk Group provides an opportunity for students from
all departments to play an active role in the college liturgy.
The weekly college liturgy lies at the heart of St Mary’s
Catholic ethos. It enables the staff and students of the
college to take time to focus on developing their spiritual
life and allows an escape from the stress of everyday life.
The Folk Group plays a vital role and works in conjunction
with the liturgy group to ensure that the Mass is fulfilling
and spiritually enriching for all those who participate.
Although the main aim of the college Folk Group is to further
the Eucharistic celebration, it also provides a social outlet
for students during practices and other events. The Folk
Group sings at the college liturgy every Thursday but also
at all major liturgical celebrations throughout the year
such as the Dedication of Studies and graduation masses.
We always welcome new members whether singers or musicians
and hope to have yet another successful year. |

The Trocaire Society helps to promote the humanitarian
work of Trocaire within the college. Don’t worry you
won’t be running round the college like mini-Bob Geldoffs.
We help to raise awareness of Trocaire’s campaigns
in new and imaginative ways and hopefully have a bit of
craic along the way. It is great way of getting to know
people and also a brilliant experience for those interested
in a career in teaching or community work. |

Despite being one of the newest Societies in the College,
the Trad Society is certainly one of the strongest. It has
already recruited many members, both musicians and otherwise.
Renowned for its “sessions” the Society certainly
provides a great night out. The Society has already forged
strong links with other Universities in Ireland. So, if
you’re musically gifted or even if you’re not
give Catherine a shout and join in the craic. |

The Fair Trade steering group within the College aims at
establishing St Mary’s as a Fair Trade University.
Buying Fair Trade products is a simple way to ensure that
trade is working for farmers and workers in developing countries.
It can change the lives of some of the poorest people in
the world. You can buy Fair Trade tea, coffee and chocolate
in both the common room snack bar and in the canteen. The
Fair Trade Society is keen to recruit new student members
this year. If you are interested contact Peter Collins for
further details. |

College has been in operation for a number of years. Over
this time, the society has been involved in the organisation
of fundraising events for Project Zambia, a scheme renowned
throughout North and West Belfast which financially supports
projects within the African country.
Members of the society meet regularly and discuss topics
of interest from a business aspect such as government influence
on economic policy and what this means for the local business
environment as well as ways to improve the delivery of the

The English Society is one of the newer Societies in the
College. However, it has put a lot of work and energy towards
fully establishing itself. Everyone is welcome and although
the Society is likely to help you with your studies it is
certainly not solely academic. It is a fantastic way to
meet new friends. In the past the English Society has organised
trips to theatres in both Dublin and Belfast and has organised
“Popular Film” nights that provide fantastic
social events beyond the usual pub and club scene. |
