Welcome to the Students' Union page! Here you will get a brief
insight into what goes on in St Mary's Students' Union.
What is the Students' Union?
The Students' Union is a democratic organisation which represents
students' interests in the College, and on a national level as
part of National Union of Students-Union of Students Ireland (NUS-USI).
It has a wide range of responsibilities, such as providing welfare
services, academic representation, supporting clubs and societies,
and making sure there are a few good nights out during the year!
Do I have to join the Students' Union?
The answer is simply: you don’t! You automatically become
a member upon entry into the College. This gives you the right
to vote in the Students' Union elections, have a say on proposed
constitutional amendments, and attend Students' Union general
meetings.
Who runs the Students' Union?
The Students' Union is run by a body known as the Students' Union
Executive. This body is made up of two full-time sabbatical officers
– the President and Deputy President – who are paid
salaries from the Students' Union budget. There are also nine
non-sabbatical officers who are in full-time education in the
College.
Who is the Students' Union answerable to?
The Students’ Union serves the students, so ultimately it
is answerable to all students in the College. The Students' Union
makes termly reports to the College's student services committee,
and officers can be questioned by students at Students' Union
general meetings. |
