Irish Medium Education

Short Description

I am involved in the provision of Irish-medium education and in the development of this area in the college. I coordinate the Irish-medium Post Primary PGCE course, which was introduced in response to the demand for subject specific teachers in the growing Irish-medium Post Primary sector. St Mary’s University College, the University of Ulster and Queen’s University Belfast have forged a partnership to offer this one year PGCE course for students interested in becoming teachers in Irish-medium secondary education. My work entails, for example, organising week-long college-based activities for the students at the beginning of the course in August and towards the end of it in June; coordinating Irish language and Irish-medium education courses in the Gaeltacht in August and around Easter time; and facilitating two whole day Saturday workshops on the Irish language, bilingualism, bilingual education and immersion pedagogy, which are held around October and February usually.

Current Research

My research interests include the following:

  • the grammar, syntax, phonology and lexis of the Irish language;

  • terminology in Modern Irish;

  • translation studies;

  • bilingualism;

  • immersion pedagogy;

  • bilingual Education;

  • folklore.
