Short Description

Management responsibilities

As Senior Tutor for Development, I contribute to strategic planning in St Mary’s. I lead and consolidate developments in College. Responsibilities involve management and close collaboration with colleagues throughout the College. I provide leadership in areas such as Work Related Learning Staff Development, Professional Development of Teachers, International development, Schools, Careers and Research, Irish-medium education. I am also a member of the College Management Team and work with colleagues to implement the College strategy for sustainability and development.

Teaching Responsibilities:

I am a Principal Lecturer on the B.Ed. degree (Irish-medium), Postgraduate Certificate Course (Irish-medium PGCE) and Masters programmes. In the taught courses, lectures are delivered in both Irish and English. I lecture within the specialist area of immersion education, Professional Studies and the curriculum areas of Literacy, the World Around Us and Numeracy. I also contribute to the BEd. primary and post-primary courses on English as an Additional Language. I supervise dissertations by BEd and Masters students. Teaching and assessment responsibilities are supported by development and planning in the area of higher education immersion approaches.

Administrative Responsibilities:

I am Course Director for the PGCE post-primary project. I am Chairperson of the PGCE (primary) Programme Team, the Irish-medium Advisory Team and the Research Committee. Administrative duties are varied, for example, I contribute to administrative aspects of the selection process for PGCE students and to management of funded projects such as a Gaeltacht experience for students.


I have represented the College on a range of committees and working groups, for example, the Review of Irish-medium Education (DE), Pobal Advisory Committee for a research project on Special Educational Needs, the Assessment Advisory Group (CCEA), Irish-medium Literacy and Numeracy Working Group (DE). I am the DE nominee on the Comhairle na Gaelscolaíochta Board of Directors. I am also a member of the Board of Governors in a local post-primary school. I have collaborated with a range of organisations on staff development, curriculum development, consultation activities, including Comhairle na Gaelscolaíochta, An Chomhairle um Oideachas Gaeltachta agus Gaelscolaíochta, Education and Library Boards, Education Centres.

Current Research

  • Linguistic and sociolinguistic developments in a bilingual community;

  • Literacy and Biliteracy development;

  • Literacy assessment methods and resources;

  • Intervention programmes for literacy.

  • Long-term research activity involved a collaborative project with Professor Marie Clay to redevelop the Observation Survey of Early Literacy Achievement (Clay 2002) into Irish. The work resulted in the production of a standard assessment resource for Irish-medium teachers.

  • I was a member of the editorial panel for the academic journal, Taighde agus Teagasc, until 2007.
