Over six hundred people attended a graduation and
commissioning ceremony for student teachers who successfully completed
a certificate course in Religious Education at St Mary’s
University College Belfast. Bishop Noel Treanor presided at a
Mass of Thanksgiving which was part of the ceremony and addressed
the assembly. He spoke of the special place that teachers have
in the lives of young people and expressed his commitment and
that of the Governing Body at St Mary’s to “custom
build the College for a sustainable future in partnership with
its local community”.
The College Principal, Professor Peter Finn, characterized St
Mary’s as a small college with a big sense of community,
specialist in nature, with a distinctive ethos and a record of
high performance. He spoke of his satisfaction with St Mary’s
ranking in The Guardian University league table in the subject
area Education. The recently published table placed St Mary’s
sixth in a list of sixty-eight universities and colleges which
provide Education at undergraduate level. Cambridge University
was listed first.
