St Mary's & Stran PGCE Professional Learning

PGCE Students from St Mary’s University College and Stranmillis University College enjoyed a day of Professional Learning in a Changing Society (PLICS) together on Monday 23 March 2026.

The morning commenced with introductions and presentations, during which students from each campus shared insights into their respective experiences of the PGCE programme.  This provided a valuable opportunity for dialogue and reflection across both university colleges.

Students then undertook the ‘Essentials of Paediatric First Aid course’, delivered by the Health Matters. The course developed students’ knowledge and understanding of the skills required to administer emergency first aid to infants and children. It also provided guidance on responding effectively to a range of common childhood illnesses and emergency situations. Students thoroughly enjoyed the course and rated their shared learning highly.

The programme provided opportunities for students to get to know one another while they worked together in workshops. The experience highlighted the importance of partnership, collaborative practice and preparation for the classroom as students continue their journey towards becoming primary school teachers.
