Saphara Newcomer Welcome Event Returns to St Mary’s University College

The Saphara Newcomer Welcome Event returned to St Mary’s University College, Belfast from 23–25 March, bringing together primary school children from disadvantaged communities with student teachers to celebrate culture, creativity and belonging in today’s diverse classrooms.

More than 80 Primary 5 pupils from Fane Street Primary School and St Paul’s Primary School took part in the programme. Many of the children come from refugee or asylum seeker backgrounds. They will be joined by second-year student teachers from St Mary’s University College and Stranmillis University College, who will lead a series of creative, interactive learning activities.

With over 90 languages now spoken by primary school pupils across Northern Ireland, the event responds to the growing need for inclusive and culturally responsive education. The initiative supports future teachers in developing practical classroom skills while giving children a space to celebrate their identities and learn from one another.
