Charlie Smyth’s adventure into NFL with New Orleans contract

Charlie Smyth’s adventure into the world of American Football is a genuine feel-good news story. I remember his long and well placed ‘kick-outs’ at Davitt’s GAC in Beechmount at a Sigerson Cup game for St Mary’s against DCU. However, never did I believe that his kicking would land him a place with New Orleans Saints. Two important observations come to mind. Firstly, Charlie practiced his ‘kick-outs’ over and over again and practice makes perfect. Secondly, Charlie took advice from Dr Ciaran Kearney on the psychology behind the kicking skills he displayed on the football field. He was naturally talented, but he worked hard with a coach and mentor.

Charlie plans to complete his MSc degree in Physical Education and Sport, and St Mary’s will facilitate him in doing that, another smart move from the young man. I guess there will be plenty of subject matter on sport in the USA to contribute to the thesis which he is required to complete, under our supervision.

He has an engaging personality which we believe will go down well in New Orleans and this is matched by a great determination to achieve in professional sport and be the best he can. His objective is excellence.

St Mary’s University College wishes Charlie every success, we are very proud of him. As we say here, “once a Rancher, always a Rancher”.
