Research Seminar Supporting ITE Mathematics Recruitment

St Mary’s University College recently welcomed colleagues to a Research Dissemination Seminar focused on Mathematics Teacher Recruitment and Retention in Northern Ireland.

The event was attended by Professor Peter Finn, Principal, alongside Angela Kane, Acting Director of Teacher Development, reflecting the Department’s strong engagement with this important area of provision.

The seminar took place against the backdrop of the Department for the Economy and Department of Education’s recent initiatives, including the rollout of fee waiver support and additional student places designed to strengthen recruitment to priority subjects such as Mathematics. These developments signal a clear strategic focus on addressing workforce needs within the education system.

The session provided an opportunity to share research, explore current practice and highlight the College’s ongoing contribution to the development of high-quality teachers in areas of critical demand. Discussions also reflected the importance of continued collaboration between the College and key stakeholders in supporting sustainable growth in ITE provision.

The event forms part of the College’s broader commitment to research-informed practice, partnership working and widening participation, ensuring that St Mary’s continues to play a central role in shaping the future of teacher education.
