Trócaire workshop

Today, our Year 2 World Around Us students took part in a highly interactive and enjoyable Trócaire workshop facilitated by Development Education Officer, Laura Rio Fernández.

There was a strong focus on Education for Sustainable Development, with engaging activities that brought key global themes to life. Out in the chilly morning air of the quad, students enthusiastically participated in the Interdependence Bean Bag Game, experiencing firsthand how closely our world is connected through shared resources and co-operation.

Back indoors, the Trading Game sparked lively competition between groups representing high, middle, and low income countries. The simulation vividly revealed the inequalities and injustices embedded in global trade, prompting both empathy and indignation among participants as they reflected on the realities faced by many communities worldwide.

The workshop clearly illustrated issues of global interdependence, human rights, climate, and social justice. Students were reminded of their powerful role as WAU teachers and their ability to make a lasting difference in the lives of their pupils, their communities, and the wider world by tackling inequality through active, inquiry-based learning in their classrooms.

The students and WAU Team left the session energised and empowered and look forward to welcoming Laura back to the college in the near future.
