Alpha in Action

Students Paused, Reflected and Found New Questions…

A quiet room, open conversation and a cup of tea – sometimes that’s all it takes to spark something bigger.

This term, the College Liturgy Group launched a new Alpha Programme initiative, creating a welcoming space for students to explore life’s big questions, faith and personal purpose. The goal was simple but ambitious: to draw students into a deeper reflection on their pathway in life.

Across the weeks, students, some rooted in faith, others with no faith background at all, gathered to consider what they hoped to achieve in life, and importantly, whether these aspirations would bring lasting satisfaction.

What followed was honest, thoughtful dialogue. After each session, the feedback carried a common thread: students felt energised, curious and challenged in the best way. Several remarked that “the discussions and questions had really got them thinking about things they had never considered before.”

For many, the standout moment came not from answers, but from realising new questions. One phrase echoed repeatedly through group reflections: “It really got me thinking.” The mix of perspectives enriched every exchange, showing that meaningful human conversation still has the power to open minds, awaken confidence and deepen understanding.

By the final session, it was clear that Alpha had grown into a community of emerging voices, exploring, connecting and reflecting together, embodying St Mary’s ethos and mission of Liturgy, Learning, and Life in Dialogue.

Seeds were planted. Minds were opened. And for some, journeys quietly shifted direction.

Because sometimes, purpose begins with simply being invited to think.
