His Holiness Pope Francis has appointed Bishop Alan McGuckian, S.J., as bishop of the diocese of Down and Connor, transferring him from the diocese of Raphoe. Bishop McGuckian will become the Senior trustee and Chair of the Governing Body at St Mary’s University College in Belfast.

He is currently Chair of the Episcopal Commission “Justice and Peace” of the Irish Episcopal Conference, and delegate of the Irish Episcopate to the Synod of Bishops.

The Principal of the College, Professor Finn KSG welcomed the appointment of Bishop McGuckian.
