Modules

The programme is structured in three modules, two of which are at Masters Level.

  1. School-Based Work
  2. Learning and Teaching in the Primary School
  3. Perspectives on the Primary Curriculum

Currently, completion of the PGCE entitles students to 30 credit points within the College’s MEd programme.

MPS4001 – School Based Work (PGCE)

This module involves preparation for and teaching in both Irish-medium and English-medium schools. Students will be given the opportunity to develop and reflect on a range of professional competences in planning and teaching units of work in selected areas of the Northern Ireland Curriculum. They will be given the opportunity to develop and reflect on professional competences specific to Irish-medium education.

MPS4002 – Learning and Teaching in the Primary School

This module will examine theories and research-based evidence informing practice in Primary Education in Northern Ireland with a specific emphasis on Irish-medium education. Topics and issues to be addressed will include: a study of children’s development and learning; a critical evaluation of selected curricular and pastoral issues; an examination of the principles of effective teaching and classroom research; a critical evaluation of theories underpinning Irish-medium immersion education; an examination of current innovations and research informing effective teaching in the Irish-medium context; and an evaluation of theories and strategies central to the promotion of biliteracy.

MPS4003 – Perspectives on the Primary Curriculum

This module aims to explore issues and developments in the NI Primary Curriculum. Topics and  subjects to be addressed will include: an examination of the of the areas of  learning in the NI Primary Curriculum; content and specific skills relating to areas of learning; relevant teaching methodologies; principles of effective learning and teaching and classroom research; the NI Curriculum in Irish-medium schools.
